Gift service that blends sustainability with style.
Catherine Blackford faced a recurring difficulty of trying to find an inspired gift for friends and family for milestone occasions. After seeing the world becoming a lot smaller due to globalisation, and local produce becoming less and less a feature in gift purchases, Bindle was born.
This is what Catherine shared about her business:
Q. Describe your business and products/services you offer
Bindle provides gift ideas for friends, family, colleagues and also corporate clients and bespoke gifts for larger events. Each Bindle (a bundle of possessions) is a compilation of several talented individuals that brings to it his or her own personality and creativity. It’s the inter-relationships that make each Bindle unique. The artisans, farmers, families, friends, and recipients. Each experience and exchange influences the final product both in a physical and in an attitudinal one.
Q. How long have you been in business?
Q. What made you decide to start this business?
I have a passion for supporting local artisans and spied a niche in the market for Australian made boutique gifts boxes that blend sustainability with style and offer a convenient service for individuals and corporates alike.
Q. How many hours a week do you work in your business?
Varies – approximately 30 hours
Q. What kind of online and offline marketing do you do and which is working for you?
Social Media / Print Publications / Events / Sponsorhsip
Q. What mistakes have you made in running your business and what less ons have you learnt from those?
After supplier product shortfall and amendments I have learnt to manage expectations with suppliers and the importance of concise communication and positive relationship building. Bindle does not exist without the wonderfully talented suppliers who provide the gift products.
Q. How has your website helped you run your business?
The website presents the product in a clean and professional manner and adds to the user experience. The shopping platform administration is build well and easy to manage.

Dealing with growth and finding a balance with supply and demand whilst maintaining a personalised boutique approach
Q. Any other comments / points you would like to share about running your business?
As a small start-up, creating a balanced approach and wearing multiple hats is difficult. Identifying areas to outsource is crucial.
