Electricity comparison site

Melbourne based Entrepreneur Ben Freund founded GoSwitch after having that all too familiar experience – moving house and being charged with the task of setting up new utility accounts and searching for the best deal.  Discovering the difficulty in finding the best deals available, Ben decided to set up GoSwitch.com.au to help consumers cut through the jargon and make an informed decision.

Here is what Ben shared about his business

Q. Describe your business and products/services you offer

GoSwitch.com.au is Australia’s leading electricity comparison website. The free, independent service allows consumers to plug in their details and calculate the best rates according to consumption and location.

GoSwitch can also switch suppliers for you right there and then enabling customers to pocket a small fortune – an average of $300 per annum.

Q. How long have you been in business?

7 years.

Q. How many hours a week do you work in your business?

60-70 hours a week.

Q.  What kind of online and offline marketing do you do and which is working for you?

GoSwitch is focusing on online marketing because we believe it is most accountable and most relevant to our users.

Q. What mistakes have you made in running your business and what lessons have you learnt from those?

I have erred in underestimating the importance consumers place on speaking to a fellow person and I have also underestimated the risked posed by regulators to consumer facing businesses.  We have learnt to invest in our call centre and in regulatory compliance.

Q. How has your website helped you run your business?

The GoSwitch.com.au website is the most important part of our business.

Q. What obstacles or challenges are you facing at the moment?

We face the challenges of a changing energy market, changing consumer behaviour and competition.

Q. Any other comments / points you would like to share about running your business?

The GoSwitch business is essentially a consumer champion that aims to bring transparency to the electricity and gas market.
