Limited edition home wares and fashion accessories

Wendy Beard worked in the travel industry, but after having children, she went back to study and retrained as an Interior Designer.  She saw lots of gorgeous pieces whilst working on projects and decided she wanted to showcase her finds and hence hello yellow was born.

This is what Wendy shared about running her business

Q. Did you have any business training before you started?

I worked as a GM for a travel firm so that was a great insight but no training as such.

Q. Describe your business and products/services you offer

Hello yellow is a boutique online store. We source original and limited edition home wares and fashion accessories. We love to find pieces that are short run and so unique and special to the owner.

Q. How long have you been running your business?

We launched in July 2013.

Q. How many hours a week do you work in your business?

It varies greatly but approx 28 hours a week and a lot of emails via my phone. I won’t even talk about the ideas in my head! I also tutor for The Interior Design Institute too approx 21 hours a week.

Q. What kind of online and offline marketing do you do and which is working for you?

We do a lot via social media, mailchimp and blogs. We also run studio events coming up to xmas etc.

Q. Do you use social media as part of your marketing?

Yes it is imperative in online business.

Q. What mistakes have you made in running your business and what lessons have you learnt from those?

Our largest mistake was spending most of our set up monies on our website and we should have allocated more to marketing etc.

Q. How has your website helped you run your business?

It is our only way to reach our clients. We LOVE it!

Q. What obstacles or challenges are you facing at the moment?

Trying to get Hello yellow ‘out there’. We are learning all the time.

Q. Any other comments / points you would like to share about running your business?

Try to find a friend who also runs their own business. It doesn’t have to be in your field but it’s great to chat to someone that is not emotionally involved in your business but who understands.
