Tutorials on how to make and sell jewellery.

Shyloh Gardiner started her business after the success of BOWtique.  Fellow crafters wanted to know how to turn a Sunday market stall into a business that had wholesalers in Australia, Asia and New Zealand. She realised that women needed a common sense approach to running a business.

Q. Describe your business and products/services you offer.

I mentor people with hobby start up business.  These are generally people who were like myself – creative and very good at what they do, but don’t have the contacts and knowledge to successfully start and run it as a business. The program runs over 6 weeks and covers 6 fundamental areas.

Q.  How long have you been in business?

The business has only been running for 6 months.

Q.  How many hours a week do you work in your business? 

I currently work about 10 hours a week, mainly building my online presence through blogs and article writing. I’m proving to myself I can start this business on a tight budget so I’m growing the business slowly and currently not putting too much money into advertising.

Q. What kind of online and offline marketing do you do and which is working for you?

Facebook marketing has worked plus I have an online sales funnel. This is the reason for article writing and blogging. I’m trying to create a natural sales funnel targeting people that are relevant and true clients.

Q. What mistakes have you made in running your business and what lessons have you learnt from those? 

The biggest lesson I learned was actually from my previous business. I thought I could make it all. I hand crafted everything. But being a full time mum and only working 3 days a week I found it nearly impossible. I made $140k in two years working 3 days a week just from my hand crafted items. I started outsourcing some of the clothing which helped, but in the end I felt the business was growing too rapidly and I couldn’t keep up. I wasn’t prepared to give up my family time and so in the end I sold the business .

Q. How has your website helped you run your business?

I run my blog and my program through the website. Each week a new module is released. The modules are made of several short videos ranging anywhere from 5 minutes to 60 minutes. The clients are then asked to complete practical exercises, which they can start implementing into their business straight away. I did it this way as I found people learn differently some people learn visually some learn from reading. It also helps when you can apply it straight away.

Q. What obstacles or challenges are you facing at the moment?

I’m just really trying to get out there. I did some research, even paid someone on odesk to research key words. They came back and said there was noone doing this. So I guess getting noticed online is hard because no one is searching for it.

But I won’t give up because I know the crafting community needs it. There are so many talented people out in our world and I want to help as many people as I can. I struggled with learning a lot of the business stuff because basically I’m not interested. I do it and I understand it but it’s something that doesn’t interest me at all. So when I started I’d just ignore it all and hope it would go away.
But it didn’t and when I learned ways to get through it and grow my business without losing my creative spark, I wanted to share it.

Q. Any other comments / points you would like to share about running your business?

I sold my previous business because it began to consume my life. I ended up with so little time with my family.  I started this business, Howtomakejewellery.com.au, to free up my time and give me more family time and me time.  Life is definitely more balanced and I am super excited about running my own business.  And I can’t wait to share it with the world.
