Joshua Strawczynski is the MD at JMarketing, a digital marketing and consultancy company that specialises in working with SMEs.
Joshua started working for Fairfax in the SME space a decade ago. He has always been passionate about working with other companies, and gave up every Saturday for the last decade to consult to his friends’ small companies. After all that experience he realised there was a gap in the market for helping small businesses to understand digital marketing, setup tracking and analysis and then implement high ROI advertising tactics.
He has found that most small business owners are busy working in their business and they don’t have the time or knowledge to do digital marketing well.
Here is what Joshua shared about running his business.
Q. How long have you been in business?
I’ve been in this field for a decade now.
Q. What did you do before you started this business?
I started at Fairfax & Melbourne IT in a joint venture they created to target SMEs. I received brilliant training from Google and Yahoo! which formed the basis of the knowledge I have today.
I also worked with the brilliant Peter Wagstaff at Monash University teaching digital marketing, and then was invited by Chisholm Institute to help design their digital marketing course.
I joined the board of directors for OGroup a student based charity and have been working hard with that dedicated group of people. I really enjoy the environment and love the cause.
That’s what led me to starting JMarketing, my passion in life.
Q. Who are your main customers and why do you enjoy working with them?
My main customers are e-commerce and SME clients. We specialise in making digital easy and accountable. I offer them month to month contracts. If they are not delighted, they can walk away at any time. That’s the promise I make to every client. I’ll be more passionate about your business than you are.
Q. Did you have any business training before you started?
I completed two business degrees at Monash University, as well as strong digital training from Google and Yahoo! I offered my friends free consultancy for 10 years, and this hands on experience taught me a lot.
Q. Describe your business and products/services you offer
JMarketing is a digital marketing company for SME’s. We setup tracking and advertising channels to explained your business either generating sales, or enquiries for you to fulfill.
We offer month to month contracts so that our clients can walk away if they are not entirely delighted.
Q. How many hours a week do you work in your business?
I work 6 days a week, around 60 hours per week
Q. What kind of online and offline marketing do you do and which is working for you?
Outside of digital, which is our bread and butter, we do a lot of teaching, business seminars and PR articles.
Teaching is particularly effective for us. Here we meet marketing managers from a number of companies, many of which come to use for advice down the track.
Q. Do you use social media as part of your marketing?
LinkedIn plays a key role in what we do. It’s a great way to post the articles that we write. The vitality of that business environment drives leads through to us quite regularly. The other social channels support it as well in the same way, but LinkedIn is full of marketing managers, so it’s best suited to our needs.
Q. What mistakes have you made in running your business and what lessons have you learnt from those?
The lesson I have learnt is never rush into business with someone without an airtight contract.
Q. What obstacles or challenges do your small business clients face most often?
In digital marketing, one of the hardest things is knowing where to start, and how to choose the right assistant. The problem with the whole field is that there are so many people that know just a little bit, but can’t put it all together. Big agencies are too big, and small agencies are too small.
Q. Any other tips you would like to share about running a small business?
Come and have a coffee with me. My advice is free and I love meeting business people across Australia.
