Stylish Nursing and Maternity Wear

When breastfeeding her first child Corryn Barakat couldn’t find stylish breastfeeding wear made from natural fibers, so she decided to start her own online boutique specialising in breastfeeding wear.  She wanted to do something positive and was passionate about breastfeeding, so she also incorporated free online lactation support for mums and they donate to the ABA.

Here is what Corryn shared about running her business.

Q. What did you do before you started this business?

I worked as an Associate Director for a professional services firm with an accounting background.

Q. Did you have any business training before you started?

I am a qualified chartered accountant.

Q. Describe your business and products/services you offer.

We specialise in stylish breastfeeding and maternity wear made with natural fibers, and also offer free online lactation support for breastfeeding mums.

Q. How long have you been running your business?

Since 2012

Q.  How many hours a week do you work in your business?

About 10hours, working around looking after our 2 kids

Q. What kind of online and offline marketing do you do and which is working for you?

We advertise in magazines related to our target market, and also list in online directories. We use Google Adwords and Social Media. At the moment 50% of our members find us through “internet search” so SEO ranking is pretty crucial to us.

Q. Do you use social media as part of your marketing?

Yes we use Facebook, Google+ and Pinterest. Of these Facebook is by far the most used, purely because it’s the one I’m most comfortable with!

Q. What mistakes hav e you made in running your business and what lessons have you learnt from those?

Not putting the right systems in place from the start – particularly for back end systems, such as your accounting! It is so much more time consuming trying to fix this up later! Also if you need a website, make sure it will do everything you need it to. This one is difficult (and expensive) to redo or change providers.

Q. How has your website helped you run your business?

Our website IS our business!

Q. What obstacles or challenges are you facing at the moment?

Lack of time is our major inhibitor.

Q. Any other comments / points you would like to share about running your business?

It is a very rewarding experience building your dreams. Also wearing so many different hats as you learn about all of the aspects of running a small business is very fulfilling.
