Swapnil Jain wanted to have his own business since his college days. After working for few years in the software industry, he decided to give his dreams a go with two of his college friends. They saw that a good number of problems are yet to be solved in the marketing industry. So they left their jobs and started building an online platform for enabling marketers and advertisers to connect their offline audience with online promotional material using QR Codes.

Here is what Swapnil shared about running his business:

Q. What did you do before you started this business?

I was working at Adobe as a Software Engineer.

Q. Who are your main customers and why do you enjoy working with them ? 

We have a mix of individual users, small businesses and agencies. Working with clients is always fulfilling because it is the best feeling in the world to see someone grow with your help and take advantage of something you have built.

Q. Did you have any business training before you started ? 

No, I didn’t have any business training as such. But as they say, being in a startup teaches you everything you need to know. My journey so far has been a major learning experience.

Q. Describe your business and products/services you offer

Scanova is an online platform that aims to solve the problems faced by businesses when it comes to engaging with their customers. Q. How many hours a week do you work in your business?

70-80 hours a week

Q. What kind of online and offline marketing do you do and which is working for you?

In our case, our potential users mostly search for this kind of service online. Hence our main focus is on online marketing. It works for us because when users come to our site, they get to try the product before purchasing or signing up for it.

Q. Do you use social media as part of your marketing?

Yes. Social media is an important aspect of our business. Both for interacting with our users and attracting new ones.

Q. What mistakes have you made in running your business and what lessons have you learnt from those?

One of the thing that could qualify as a mistake could be underestimating the need to talk to our customers. Initially, we thought that conversations through emails are enough. But later we realised how important communication with customers is. As a result of this, we added live support chat to our website. We see customers more at ease when they have someone they can talk to whenever they face any problem.

Q. What obstacles or challenges do your small business clients face most often?

Attracting more customers is something our small business clients usually struggle with. In most cases they have small marketing budgets, which make it even more difficult for them to attract new customers or try costly marketing techniques.

Q. Any other tips you would like to share about running a small business?

In today’s world where technology plays such an important role, marketing is no more just about big budgets and spending. A strategically thought out plan if executed properly can result in big success. Reaching out and engaging with your customers has become more important than it ever was.
