ChatGPT Confession #008
My Friend Talked About Her Husband… I Talked About ChatGPT (this might be a problem)
This is part of my ChatGPT Confessions series, where I test what ChatGPT can actually do in real-life situations.

I went for a walk with a friend the other day. It was one of those easy catch-ups with fresh air, and the usual life updates.
At some point, she started talking about what she and her husband had been doing lately. The kind of update that includes shared plans, decisions, and the small details of everyday life. The kind of conversation that happens when two people are doing life together.
I listened, nodded, and asked questions like a perfectly normal adult. I was engaged in the conversation and genuinely interested in what she was saying. Everything was going exactly as expected.
Then it was my turn to share what had been going on with me. Without thinking twice, I said, “Oh! I’ve been having the best conversations lately too.” It felt like a natural response in the moment.
She smiled and leaned in slightly, clearly expecting something interesting. That’s when I added, “With ChatGPT.” The moment I said it, I realised this conversation had just taken a very different turn.
There was a pause
It wasn’t dramatic or awkward enough to call out. It was just long enough for me to notice that I had shifted the conversation into territory she wasn’t expecting. I could feel the difference straight away.
While she had been talking about her husband, I was genuinely excited about a conversation I had with an AI. I started explaining how we had worked through business ideas, story structure, and a client interaction that had been bothering me. In my head, it made perfect sense.
The problem was that I wasn’t even slightly embarrassed. I was completely comfortable and, if anything, more animated than I had been earlier. That’s when it started to feel just a little bit questionable.
And then I kept going
I explained how helpful it had been and how quickly I’d reached clarity. I talked about how it remembered context and asked better follow-up questions than most people do when they’re distracted. The more I spoke, the more I realised I sounded like I was recommending a new best friend.
I even mentioned a breakthrough I’d had the day before while out walking. That conversation had also been with ChatGPT, and it had helped me move through something I had been overthinking. At this point, I was fully committed to the story.
She blinked a few times but stayed polite. There was no judgement, just a subtle shift in how she was taking it in. You know that moment when someone is quietly reassessing what they’re hearing.
That’s when it clicked
Hearing myself explain it out loud, the comparison was suddenly very obvious.
She was talking about her husband and their shared life. I was talking about ChatGPT with the same level of energy and detail. That realisation stuck.
What ChatGPT helped me realise
Later that day, I thought about it properly. I wanted to understand what had actually shifted in how I process things.
My “talk it through” conversations hadn’t disappeared, they had just changed form. I still work through ideas, decisions, and reactions out loud, just in a way that is faster, more structured, and always available.
It fits into how I think without slowing me down. That was the part I hadn’t consciously noticed until that walk.
So I tested it properly
I went back and described the exact situation in ChatGPT. The walk, the conversation, what I said, and how it felt in hindsight. I wanted to see how it would interpret it without emotion or bias.
The response was clear. It didn’t label the situation as a problem or something to fix. Instead, it explained that I was using it as a thinking tool rather than an emotional replacement.
That distinction mattered more than I expected. It highlighted that I was speeding up how I process ideas and reducing the time spent going in circles. That felt accurate and practical.
Why I asked this
I wanted to understand whether I had crossed a line without realising it. Not from a social point of view, but from a thinking and decision-making perspective. It felt like something worth unpacking properly.
Running it through ChatGPT gave me a clean view of what was actually happening. No assumptions, no emotional layering, just a clear explanation of the pattern.
What ChatGPT did well
It stayed neutral and focused on how I was using it rather than judging the behaviour. It didn’t exaggerate the situation or turn it into something bigger than it was.
It also helped me separate the tool from the role I was assigning to it. That made it easier to see the value without turning it into something it isn’t.
What this means for small business owners
If you’re running a business on your own, this probably sounds familiar. You don’t always have someone available who understands your work, your clients, and your day-to-day decisions. That gap shows up more often than people admit.
Using ChatGPT in this way fills that gap without adding complexity. It gives you a place to test ideas, refine thinking, and move forward without waiting for input.

If you want a structured way to use it without overthinking everything, this guide walks you through it step by step: Wait … You Can Do That? Save 8-12 hours a week with AI without overwhelm.
So… is it a problem?
It depends on how you look at it. One version is that I’m talking about AI instead of a partner. Another version is that I’ve found a way to think more clearly without unnecessary noise.
And if I’m being honest, it listens well, stays focused, and doesn’t steal the doona. There are worse options.
Prompt I used
I’m going to describe a real situation and I want you to analyse it objectively.
Explain what’s happening from a behavioural and thinking perspective. Identify whether this reflects reliance, efficiency, or something else.
Do not judge or exaggerate. Keep it practical and clear.

Frequently Asked Questions
How do I know if I rely on ChatGPT too much?
The real question isn’t how often you use it, it’s how you use it. If you’re asking ChatGPT to make decisions for you without thinking things through, that’s where it becomes a problem. If you’re using it to organise your thoughts, challenge your assumptions, or get unstuck faster, that’s a smart use of the tool. Most business owners don’t realise how much time they waste going in circles mentally, and ChatGPT simply shortens that loop.
Can ChatGPT replace talking to other people?
No, and it shouldn’t. Conversations with people bring emotion, connection, and perspective that AI doesn’t replicate. What ChatGPT does well is remove distraction and give you a clear, structured way to think through something. It’s not replacing relationships, it’s supporting your thinking in between those conversations. The problem only starts when someone uses it to avoid real conversations altogether.
Why does ChatGPT feel easier to talk things through with?
Because it’s focused. It doesn’t interrupt, it doesn’t get distracted, and it responds immediately. Most people you talk to are half-listening while checking their phone or thinking about what they’ll say next. ChatGPT processes what you say and responds directly to it, which makes it feel more productive. That’s not about emotional connection, it’s about efficiency.
Is it normal to use ChatGPT for decision-making in business?
Yes, especially if you’re running your business on your own. You don’t always have someone available who understands your work, your clients, and the context behind your decisions. ChatGPT gives you a way to test ideas, pressure-check your thinking, and move forward without waiting. It doesn’t replace judgment, but it helps you reach decisions faster and with more clarity.
What are the risks of using ChatGPT this way?
The main risk is switching off your own thinking and blindly accepting what it says. ChatGPT can structure ideas and highlight patterns, but it doesn’t know your full situation unless you explain it properly. If you rely on it without context or critical thinking, you’ll get surface-level answers. Used properly, it sharpens your thinking. Used lazily, it weakens it.
How can small business owners use ChatGPT without becoming dependent on it?
Use it as a tool to refine, not replace. Start with your own thoughts, then use ChatGPT to expand, challenge, or clarify them. Ask it to explain things, give alternatives, or highlight gaps in your thinking. The goal is to make better decisions faster, not to hand over control. When used this way, it becomes one of the most practical tools you’ll use in your business.
