The easiest way to make beer at home
Adrian MacGeraghty started home brewing and wasn’t happy with the kits on the market so he made his own! He is also a sales and marketing guy and loved the idea of working for himself.
Q. Describe your business and products/services you offer.
We are BrewSmith, a manufacturer and retailer of boutique beer making kits. We sell all the equipment and ingredients to make great tasting beer at home. We sell online, through retailers and at markets and events
Q. How long have you been in business?
Almost 2 years in business
Q. How many hours a week do you work in your business?
Depends on the time of year – could be 30 to 70 (Christmas is super busy)!
Q. What kind of online and offline marketing do you do and which is working for you?
We use social media to promote our products as well as Google Ad Words, online advertising on beer related sites. Offline, we use PR (we have had national press and TV coverage), events (beer making classes, beer festivals, food and drink events) and we hold parties with every new flavour launch
Q. What mistakes have you made in running your business and what lessons have you learnt from those?
We’ve made a few mistakes along the way – doing markets outside of Christmas time is not a good use of our time, not always holding enough stock, concentrating on restocking instead of selling. We’re learning!
Q. How has your website helped you run your business?
Our website is critical to our business. It accounts for around 50% of the volume of our sales but much more proportionally of our profitability since we sell direct to consumers on our website and not via a retailer. It’s also a great promotional tool for us, being able to sell 24/7
Q. What obstacles or challenges are you facing at the moment?
How to scale our business. It’s been doing really well but to get to the next level, we need to increase the volume and then that brings into question how to manufacture and warehouse our stock. Good problem to have, however!
Q. Any other comments / points you would like to share about running your business?
We love it and don’t regret it for a moment. It’s relentless and there aren’t enough hours in the day but when we speak to one of our customers and they tell us how much they love our product, it makes it 100% worth while.
