Practical and adorable baby products
Having worked for the airline industry for 15 years and observing traveling families, it always amazed Michelle Kuramochi what products parents had. Some would bring everything but the kitchen sink, while others would even forget the nappies.
So when she became a new mum Michelle decided to be ultra prepared and while visiting her husband’s family in Japan, Michelle found SUPPORi Baby Sling. She realised what a great product it was and decided to start her business selling it to other new parents.
This is what Michelle shared about her business:
Q. Describe your business and products/services you offer.
Weighing only 80 grams, SUPORi is compact and can even be worn in the water. SUPPORi Baby Sling is made in Japan and the technology and research behind it makes it what it is. SUPPORi has won 5 international awards for practicality, function, design and likeability.
Shupeas is another international ward winning product from America. The designer and owner of Shupeas was previously an executive for Loui Vuitton and I believe her eye for style is in each and every show. They are practical shoes which grow with your baby. One size covers 4 shoe sizes!
Q. How long have you been in business?
I have been in business for just over a year.
Q. How many hours a week do you work in your business?
I work anywhere for 10 hours a week to 50. I need to work around my family, my two children and also my airline job. I tried set hours but it didn’t work…
Q. What kind of online and offline marketing do you do and which is working for you?
I advertise in some magazines, as well as on social media. I have people working on SEO for me. I am still coming to grips with everything there is to do in a small business and look forward to more blogging and cross promoting. I attend Parents and baby expos which is wonderful as people get to see, feel and try our products.
Q. How has your website helped you run your business?
Our bricks and mortar stockists list is growing but without my website we would not have been able to grow SUPPORi this quick. It is wonderful as it ticks over daily and it is a great source for people to research our products and contact us if they have any queries.
Q. What mistakes have you made in running your business and what lessons have you learnt from those?
The biggest mistakes I have made are only mistakes because they have caused me to loose the greatest amount of money. This mistake would be in regards to my website set up costs. Each ‘mistake’ has taught me so much!
Q. What obstacles or challenges are you facing at the moment?
My biggest hurdle has been where to spend money on advertising. It is all so expensive so we have been working hard to try to find the best spot for ROI. I am still figuring out so many things but have begun to outsource jobs which has been wonderful. It is great knowing you have a helping hand!
Q. Any other comments / points you would like to share about running your business?
I had always wanted to do something for myself and played around a little with manufacturing things. But my passion for SUPPORi made me get started. Having peace of mind knowing the product inside out and back to front and that it was quality and lasts gave me the confidence to take such a big step. Also, knowing how particular Japan are in regards to their quality and attention to detail I know my customers would be getting the very best each and every time!
