Interior Design and Building Services
While working as an interior designer, Melissa Bonney decided that she wanted to provide a more holistic service, offering interior design services as well as a concept store where customers could browse beautiful homewares, furniture and art and so The Design Hunter was born.
Q. What did you do before you started this business?
I began by renovating and decorating houses in both New York and Sydney and loved it. In order to take it from a hobby to a career, I decided to study interior design full time which led to an interior design career that I managed from home while my children were small.
Q. Did you have any business training before you started?
I have a solid background in business management from years working in the private sector.
Q. Describe your business and products/services you offer
The Design Hunter is based in Sydney’s beachside suburbs, and is an interior design and building services business which is complemented by our unique retail experience housing a continually curated selection of bespoke pieces. Our philosophy is one of collaboration and design sensibility in all aspects of our work.

Q. What mistakes have you made in running your business and what lessons have you learnt from those?
Being the business owner, I’m constantly living and breathing all things Design Hunter and can get too involved in every aspect of running the business. I’ve learnt that it’s really important to take time out and switch off.
Q. How has your website helped you run your business?
Our website is an easy way for clients to learn about us and our services as well as browse our products and make informed purchasing decisions.
Q. What obstacles or challenges are you facing at the moment?
Our biggest challenge at the moment would be trying to manage our growth. Deciding on how and when to expand or move to a larger studio are all very big decisions with big long term impact. We have to try not to rush into every opportunity and stick to our plan and core values.
Q. Any other comments / points you would like to share about running your business?
We have a really strong, loyal team of people who all work well together, which is really important in any business but especially in small businesses.
