Jennifer Martin was working 60 hours a week negotiating multi-million dollar contract for a nationwide communications company. She was overworked, stressed out and felt like she had no life. At 34 years old she knew that she couldn’t go on like this for long. Jennifer spent a summer finding a new city to live in and ventured out into the land of Entrepreneurship opening her first Business Consulting Company.
Here is what Jennifer shared about running her business:
Q. How long have you been in business?
Q. What did you do before you started this business?
I was a top level salesperson for a variety of organizations. I also owned a restaurant and catering company, a book publishing company, and a real estate investment firm.
Q. Who are your main customers and why do you enjoy working with them?
I primarily work with Solopreneurs and Small Business Owners. Having come from a corporate background I prefer working with real people in real jobs. When my clients start working with their ideal clients, start increasing their income, and figure out how to enjoy their lives while doing it all, I feel so lucky to be a part of their lives.
Q. Did you have any business training before you started?
I had worked in a variety of positions for some very large organizations in sales, marketing, management, public affairs, and human resources. I had owned several businesses of my own and had been trained in more than 120 business development lessons while working for EMyth as a Business Coach.
Q. Describe your business and products/services you offer
I offer web-based Private Business Coaching as well as a 6 week Group Program called More Money, More Clients, More Life, in addition to offering Conscious Business Owner Camp (Retreats for Business Owners who want to Take Back Their Lives and Learn How to Build a Business Around a Life they Love.
Q. How many hours a week do you work in your business?
Q. What kind of online and offline marketing do you do and which is working for you?
There are a variety of things I do to generate new business ranging from ongoing SEO for my websites to giving a lot of free presentations and receiving referrals from my strategic business partners.
Q. Do you use social media as part of your marketing?
YES!!! I just launched a splash page to help build a newsletter list through offering a free download – 10 Fast & Easy Ways to Get Out of Overwhelm and Feel More Balanced at Work
Q. What mistakes have you made in running your business and what lessons have you learnt from those?
Aye, yay, yay. The list is really long here. I feel like in all the businesses that I’ve owned I’ve probably made every mistake there is.
Here the biggest lesson I’ve learned along the way:
Just because you can do it yourself, doesn’t mean you should.
Working with small business owners as a business coach I’m constantly reminding them that if they are most valuable to their company when they are doing the work that can make the biggest impact (think closing a sale, offering a high end service, creating affiliate partnerships, etc.) then what you don’t want to find yourself doing is the entry level work (think answering phones, opening mail, responding to basic e-mails, updating social media, etc.).
If you are in a growth mode and you want to make more money you need to focus your energy on, guess what? meeting more people. Again, just because you can do it, doesn’t mean you should.
Q. What obstacles or challenges do your small business clients face most often?
Most of them have one of three problems,
1. Not enough Clients
2. Not enough Money
3. Not enough Life
Q. Any other tips you would like to share about running a small business?
Sure, I have found that there are some secrets that successful business owners not only know, but that they live by. A great deal of their success can be attributed to creating a business that embodies what I call the “Six Wins”
1. Create a business that gives you joy, satisfaction and meaning.
2. Make that business work for everyone involved – this includes:
