Unlocking the secrets of insurance
Working in the insurance industry Kate Fairley didn’t feel enough was being done to assist people in making an informed decision about the pol icy coverage and payout at claim time and so she decided to launch a website which would break down some of the barriers.
Q. Describe your business and products/services you offer
Get Informed is a free resource for consumers and business owners which unlocks the secrets of insurance. We don’t sell insurance, we explain it using easy to understand language and connect people with the only place you can get professional advice for no obligation or cost – qualified insurance brokers.
Q. How long have you been in business?
We launched in April 2013 so just under 12 months and have so far subscribed 53 brokers across Australia which provides a great deal of choice for people looking for someone to help with their insurance questions. Our website traffic has increased to around 500 hits per month on a very bare bones marketing budget which is quite an achievement.
Q. How many hours a week do you work in your business?
It varies depending on the week and time of year, sometimes I’m working non stop, other times I work 20 hours per week, but being a business owner I’m always on the clock.
Q. What kind of online and offline marketing do you do and which is working for you?
Offline is fairly limited, we did some work with the Blue Mountains bushfires most recently to provide free assistance for victims which was very rewarding. We also do expos from time to time and director Kate has moved into the speaking circle which is quite an effective medium. In the online space Kate writes several blogs for various websites, has a regular position with Women’s Network Australia and Savvy SME in addition to blog posts on the Get Informed website itself. Social media also plays a significant role in driving traffic to the website.
Q. What mistakes have you made in running your business and what lessons have you learnt from those?
I really don’t like the word mistake. I prefer the term ‘choice’. Which choices have you made which didn’t work out so well, and would you choose to do things differently? Life throws opportunities at you every single day, it’s about how we respond to those opportunities which determines how successful we become.
Q. How has your website helped you run your business?
Get Informed is an eBusiness so it is the hub of all communication, you could build an online presence on social media for this type of information but it’s always helpful to have a solid website behind it.
Q. What obstacles or challenges are you facing at the moment?
Deciding where to spend the marketing budget is a big challenge, what’s going to get the most exposure, where do I put my energy, how do I bring new traffic to the website? Business owner isn’t the right title, it should be ‘professional decision maker’!
Q. Any other comments / points you would like to share about running your business?
When I decided to start Get Informed I was 24 years old. There will be doubts, there will be hurdles and it will always feel like you’re pushing a wheelbarrow full of concrete up a rocky mountain path, but it you’re persistent and consistent you will succeed. Insurance is one of the most rewarding careers you could dream of, having the ability to assist people and rebuild their lives after the worst case scenario has happened to them, there’s no better place I’d rather be.
