When she returned from a 6 month trip, Caterina Zaini decided that she wanted to change career paths into something which had an international component.  She stumbled across freight forwarding and learnt as much as she could before she started her business in October 2011.

Here is what Caterina shared about running her business:

Q. What did you do before you started this business?

Prior to starting Global Logistics Consulting I worked in a freight forwarding company as well as a variety of retail settings for long periods of time in managerial positions, which I learnt a vast amount about how to interact with customers, businesses and much more.

Q. Who are your main customers and why do you enjoy working with them?

Our main customer s at the moment would have to be SME businesses looking to import. The main reason Global Logistics Consulting came about was through the lack of support and knowledge shared with new importers as to what to look out for and reasonable prices. Seeing small businesses grow is such a joy especially knowing you were able to assist, even in such a small way.

Q. Did you have any business training before you started?

I have completed a Bachelor of Business where I majored in International Business and Management as well as a Diploma in International Business. Currently I am completing a basic DG (Dangerous Goods) course and have more training on the list of things to do as I believe it is always great to ask questions and continue learning.

Q. Describe your business and products/services you offer

Global Logistics Consulting provides a customised logistics service for businesses, to help make importing goods into Australia and abroad as simple as possible. We arrange everything from the delivery of goods from your supplier to your door, to auditing your current systems and teaching you how to import to Australia. We are here to help achieve new efficiencies and take away the stress.

Q. How many hours a week do you work in your business?

Working in the business I would work approximately 40 hours a week and working on the business well, there is no limit on how much time is spent trying to find ways to improve and add value.

Q. What kind of online and offline marketing do you do and which is working for you?

Online marketing would be mostly social media, contributing articles to appropriate websites and blog posts. Offline would consist of trade shows and word of mouth. The best marketing for us has always been word of mouth.

Q. Do you use social media as part of your marketing?

Social media is part of our marketing although does not constitute a big part. We usually post up to date information and industry news on social media as well as funny facts and inspirations so it’s not all about work.

Q. What mistakes have you made in running your business and what lessons have you learnt from those?

There would be a few, but nothing that I haven’t learnt from. Having goals and being accountable to someone for those goals is something that helps you strive to keep moving forward and creating a better business, otherwise you can tend to drift from what your core goals are and waste time.
