ChatGPT Confession #019 – I Realised Every Time Someone Questioned My Price, I Felt Like I Had to Prove Myself

The Call

It was a Zoom call with someone who wanted to find out about my services. The conversation itself was easy. We talked through what they needed, what I do, how I approach projects, and it all felt like a good fit.

Nothing felt off during the call. They were engaged, asking the right questions, and I could see them mentally mapping out how this would work for their business. It was the kind of call I’ve had hundreds of times.

Right at the end, just as we were wrapping up, they said they were going to speak to a few other developers and compare prices.

What Happened Next

It was such a normal thing to say. Anyone looking at investing in a website is going to do that, and there’s nothing wrong with it. I’ve heard it before, and I’ll hear it again.

What stood out wasn’t what they said. It was what happened in me the second I heard it.

I felt it straight away. That quiet pressure to step in and say something that would keep them from going elsewhere. Not in an obvious way, just a subtle shift where I felt like I needed to reinforce my value before the call ended.

The Reaction I Didn’t Notice Before

I started explaining more. I went back over what was included, how I work, what makes my process different, why the end result is better when it’s done properly. Everything I said was true, and it all sounded reasonable.

Looking back, I can see what I was doing. I wasn’t just answering questions. I was trying to close the gap before they had even gone to compare anything.

It felt like I had to make sure they understood why my price made sense before they spoke to anyone else.

What Was Going Through My Head

The thought came in quickly. If they compare, they might find someone cheaper. If they find someone cheaper, they might choose them instead. If they choose them, I lose the project.

That line of thinking doesn’t stay contained. It starts shaping how you speak, how much you say, and how quickly you say it. You move from having a conversation to trying to influence the outcome.

I could feel that shift happening, even if I didn’t have the words for it at the time.

Why It Didn’t Sit Right

After the call, I kept thinking about it. The conversation itself was fine, but something about how I handled that moment didn’t sit right with me.

I know the value of what I do. I know the level of thinking, experience, and care that goes into every project. That part has never been unclear to me.

The part that felt off was how quickly I moved into trying to make sure they saw it the same way, instead of just letting them decide.

Asking ChatGPT

I opened ChatGPT because I wanted to understand what I was doing in those moments.  I asked a simple question. When someone says they’re going to compare prices, how should I respond without feeling like I need to prove anything?

That question shifted the focus straight away. It stopped being about the price and started being about how I was showing up in that conversation.

What Became Clear

The response made me see something I hadn’t fully acknowledged before. I was taking responsibility for how they felt about my pricing.

That responsibility doesn’t belong there. My role is to be clear about what I offer and how I work. Their role is to decide if it’s right for them.

When those roles blur, the conversation changes. It starts to feel like persuasion instead of a decision.

What I Changed

The next time it came up, I handled it differently. I didn’t jump in to explain or add more detail.

I acknowledged what they said and left it there. No rush to fill the space, no need to guide them toward a particular conclusion. Just a clear, steady response and a natural end to the conversation.

That felt unfamiliar at first. There’s a moment where you want to say more, just to make sure everything is covered. Letting that moment pass was the change.

What I Noticed After That

The next time it happened, I was aware of it as it was happening. The same situation came up, the same kind of comment about comparing prices, and I could feel that familiar urge to jump in and start explaining.

This time, I didn’t follow it. I answered the question and then stopped. There was a small pause after that, the kind that normally makes you want to fill the space straight away, and I just let it sit there.

That moment felt different. There was no rush, no sense that I needed to manage what they were thinking or guide them toward a particular outcome. The conversation stayed where it was instead of being pushed somewhere else.

I noticed it in my body as well. I felt calmer, more grounded, and a lot less reactive. I wasn’t trying to get ahead of anything or anticipate what they might do next. I was just present in the conversation.

The dynamic between us shifted as a result. It felt more even, more like a decision being made on both sides rather than something I had to influence. The focus moved naturally toward whether the work was the right fit, instead of circling around the price.

That changed how I experienced the whole interaction. There was no pressure to prove anything, and without that pressure, everything felt clearer.  It’s a subtle shift when you look at it from the outside. From the inside, it changes everything about how you show up.

The Takeaway

This wasn’t about pricing. It was about how I responded the moment my pricing was questioned.  That reaction had been running quietly in the background for a long time. Once I saw it clearly, it became much easier to change. The words didn’t need to be perfect. They just needed to come from a place that didn’t require me to prove anything.

Frequently Asked Questions

How can ChatGPT help you handle difficult client conversations?

It gives you distance from the moment. When you’re in the conversation, you react quickly. ChatGPT lets you step back afterwards and see what you actually did, which is where the real shift starts.

Why use ChatGPT after a conversation instead of during it?

After the conversation, you’re not under pressure to respond. That makes it easier to reflect honestly on how you handled it and what you would do differently next time.

What kind of prompt works best for situations like this?

Simple, direct questions work best. Asking how to respond without over-explaining or sounding defensive is enough to surface patterns you might not see on your own.

What does ChatGPT actually help you see that you might miss?

It highlights your behaviour, not just the situation. When you’re inside the moment, it’s easy to focus on what the client said. ChatGPT shifts the focus to how you responded, which is where the change happens.

How does ChatGPT help improve your communication over time?

It helps you recognise patterns. Once you see the same reaction showing up in different situations, it becomes easier to change it before it happens again.

Can ChatGPT help you sound more confident in conversations?

Yes, but not by giving you scripts. It helps you understand what’s driving your response, and that naturally changes how you come across when you speak.

What’s the biggest benefit of using ChatGPT in situations like this?

Clarity. It slows your thinking down and helps you see what’s actually going on, which makes your next response more intentional instead of reactive.
