ChatGPT Confession #018 – I Asked ChatGPT How to Handle Becoming an Empty Nester

The Call That Changed Everything

I was sitting at lunch with friends when Jordan called. He told me he got the job in Melbourne, the one he’d applied for with Red Bull, and in that moment I knew this wasn’t just an update. This was the moment I’d been preparing for without ever really believing it would arrive.

The first thing that came out of my mouth was “oh no.” It surprised me as much as it probably surprised him, because underneath that reaction was the sudden awareness that everything was about to change. I knew I had about two months before he left, and those two months suddenly felt very short.

It’s easy to think you’re ready for something like this. You tell yourself it’s part of life, that it’s what you’ve been working toward all along, and that you’ll handle it when the time comes. Then the time actually arrives …

What I Felt (and Didn’t Want to Show)

I felt proud of him straight away. That part was clear, and I could see how excited he was about what was ahead. At the same time, there was this heavy, unsettled feeling sitting underneath it that didn’t have a clear name.

It felt like loss, even though nothing had been taken away. It felt like everything was shifting at once, and I didn’t quite know where I fitted in that new version of things yet.

I didn’t want him to carry any of that. This was his opportunity, his next step, and I wanted him to feel completely supported in it. That meant finding a way to deal with my side of it quietly, without letting it spill over into something that might hold him back.

Trying to Prepare for Something You Can’t Fully Understand

I told myself I would get ahead of it. I would prepare, adjust slowly, and ease into the idea so that when the day came, I would be ready. It felt like the practical way to handle something emotional.

That approach worked for a while. It gave me something to focus on and made it feel like I had some level of control over what was coming. At the same time, there was a part of me that knew I was only preparing for the idea of it, not the reality.

You can plan around a situation. You can’t fully plan for how it will feel when it actually happens.

The Day It Became Real

The day he packed up his car was the moment everything shifted. Up until then, it still felt like something that was approaching, something that hadn’t quite arrived yet.

Watching him load everything in made it real in a way I hadn’t allowed myself to fully process. Every bag and every box carried a quiet finality, like we were both moving through something significant without needing to say much about it.

Then he got in the car and drove off toward Melbourne, and I just stood there. There’s no real way to prepare for that moment. You can understand it, support it, and still feel like something in your everyday life has just changed shape in a way you can’t undo.

That was when it settled in properly. Not as a thought, but as a feeling that stayed with me long after the car was out of sight.

The Questions I Couldn’t Answer on My Own

After that, my head filled up quickly. The questions didn’t have clear answers, and they weren’t the kind you can solve with a checklist.

What does my day look like now? What does the house feel like without him in it? How do I adjust to not having him around for the small, everyday moments that used to just happen without thinking?

I didn’t have a framework for any of it. It just sat there and I needed somewhere to put it.

The Conversation I Didn’t Expect to Have

I opened ChatGPT and asked exactly what I was thinking. How do I make this okay? How do I learn to live without him being part of my day-to-day life? How do I handle what’s coming?

There was nothing structured about the question. It was everything at once, and I wasn’t trying to tidy it up before asking.

The response met me where I was. It acknowledged what I was feeling without trying to minimise it or rush past it, and that alone made it easier to sit with.

What Actually Helped

From there, it helped me look at what the next phase could look like in a more grounded way. It brought things back to simple, practical steps, and that alone made everything feel more manageable.

We looked at planning trips to Melbourne, working out when he might come back, and having those moments in the calendar gave me something concrete to hold onto. It changed the feeling from distance to connection, even if that connection looked different now.

Then it shifted the focus back to me. What do I want my days to look like? What do I want to do with my time? Those questions were harder, but they were also necessary.

Where the Shift Happened

Something started to change when I stopped looking at it as something I had lost and started looking at it as something that was changing. That didn’t remove the feeling, but it gave it a different shape.

I could still miss the way things were and begin to think about what comes next at the same time. Those two things can sit together, even though they feel like they shouldn’t.

That made it easier to move forward without feeling like I had to leave something behind completely.

The Bigger Takeaway

This experience had nothing to do with technology on the surface. It was about having something that helped me think clearly when everything felt unfamiliar.

There’s a lot of conversation about using AI for productivity, efficiency, and saving time. There’s another layer to it that shows up in moments like this, when your head is full and you don’t quite know what to do with it.

AI & Automation

The prompt I used was simple: how do I make this okay, how do I learn to live without him on a daily basis, and how do I handle what’s coming. That was enough to start a conversation that helped me think more clearly about something I didn’t have a clear path through.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why would my website get hacked even after updating everything?

Updates reduce known vulnerabilities, but they don’t eliminate all risk. Hacks can happen through hosting environments, outdated integrations, weak access points, or newly discovered vulnerabilities.

What does “Dangerous site” actually mean?

It means Google has detected content on your site that could harm users, such as malware, phishing scripts, or injected code. It’s a warning designed to protect visitors before they enter your site.

Why didn’t my security plugin stop the hack?

Security plugins can detect and alert you, but they don’t prevent every type of attack. In this case, the alert existed but was filtered into a system folder, which meant it wasn’t seen immediately.

How long does it take to remove a Google warning after a hack?

It depends on how quickly the issue is cleaned and how fast Google reviews the site. After fixing the problem, you need to request a review in Google Search Console, and that process can take time.  And if you don’t have access to Google Search Console it can take days.

Can ChatGPT fix a hacked website?

No, but it can help you understand what’s happening and what steps to take next. That clarity helps you respond more effectively instead of reacting blindly.
